Carry It On 05:24
I want to see people dancing in the streets I want to see people dancing every night of the week I want to see people making music, being proud of who they are Proud of where they come from I want to see people shaking hands with each other No judgement at all I want to see people listen to each other, really listen Wey hey hey, we carry it on, we make it our own Wey hey hey, we pass it on down, through generations And everybody has something they can learn and something they can teach Even the child who smiles shy in the doorway, she knows something you don’t know Even the poor man you see on the corner rattling the remnants of his dreams Even the wealthy man who sits in his mansion searching for something, searching for something If you listen you will hear the sound You might hear the sound of a friend you never know If you listen you will hear the sound You might hear the sound of revolution If you listen you will hear the sound You might hear the sound of a heart breaking open If you listen you will hear the sound You just might hear the sound of peace Wey hey hey, we carry it on, we make it our own Wey hey hey, we pass it on down, through generations

Come on Down 03:42
Don’t mind the weather Just stick together And if it’s hot then the weather’s getting dangerous, it don’t matter to me Many a man who would take a cold weapon and shoot you down dead in the street And if a child want to grow right wild eyed we’d got to give him peace It’s hard to grow when the guns keep blazing every day in the land of the free Come on down now people just come on down We’ve got work to do ain’t no use lying around We’ve got to hold this city up like a mother’s grown child Keep singing these songs when the going gets tough then the people still smile And I could float down the whole Mississippi St. Paul to New Orleans Lean pickings hard times in America tell you just what I’ve seen Come on down now people just come on down We’ve got work to do ain’t no use lying around In Wolof: Yagg na yagg na yagg na Yagg na mbeur mi maam mo ko daan Reukko ngi saa ndiaye Mbiri biri mbato Mbato mbato yeuboo Mbato mbako yeubat Cow li cow li lu ko waral Sama ganyi juggal wuti ligeey Duggal wuti job Wax ci keur gi Moo jeri nyula dara Doxoontu ci keur gi Moo jeri nyula dara (Long time, long time, long time ago My ancestors played sabar I’m giving a blessing The talk, the talk, why the talk We need to stand up and work Just talk isn’t enough Hanging out is not enough) Come on down now people just come on down We’ve got work to do ain’t no use lying around

If you cannot find your feet Now let it move, let it move you Feel it in your body Now let it move, let it move you It’s been there for three thousand years Now let it move, let it move you The rhythm’s in the melody Now let it move, let it move you The rhythm’s in the melody The rhythm’s in the melody The rhythm’s in the melody It may be new it may be old But it’s got roots down in your soul It don’t matter where you come from Go ahead and lose control The rhythm’s in the melody The rhythm’s in the melody The rhythm’s in the melody Beautiful Line The band composed this as a whole at a rehearsal in 2018. Later, Elias wrote the lyrics and Lamine composed the bàkk. He’s got his hands upon the wheel, eyes on the road The rainy city goes by in streaks, out the window Don’t you feel like we’re sleeping, feel like we’re dreaming and if we could wake up, what kind of world would we grow? His pain sits with mine, but we sit alone Strangers and yet we both think it’s possible In these conversations I feel there’s a home for all of us somewhere He goes left at the bridge and I’m lost in the glaze of the evening glow And it’s so hard to know where to turn or if this is our road But I know there is peace and kindness where we go And I can see the green valley of hope laid out before us We have to walk towards it We have to try for it So what would it look like he says, I want to know We’re sitting at a stoplight just waiting for the signal to go I see houses of plenty where the doors are always open He says I see my grandmother’s face, and it’s not quite so broken, so broken And it’s so hard to know where to turn or if this is our road But I know there is peace and kindness where we go And I can see the green valley of hope laid out before us We have to walk towards it We have to try for it

A' Ghrian 05:04
FÀILTE ort fein, a ghrian nan tràth, 'S tu siubhal ard nan speur ; Do cheumaibh treun air sgeith nan ard, 'S tu màthair àigh nan reul. Thu laighe sios an cuan na dith Gun diobhail is gun sgàth ; Thu 'g eirigh suas air stuagh na sith, Mar rioghainn òg fo bhlàth. Hail to thee, thou sun of the seasons, As thou traversest the skies aloft ; Thy steps are strong on the wing of the heavens, Thou art the glorious mother of the stars. Thou liest down in the destructive ocean Without impairment and without fear ; Thou risest up on the peaceful wave-crest Like a queenly maiden in bloom. Come on down, clap your hands now, clap your hands with me We’re gonna dance all night, dance all day, till we all get free

What a Day 06:00

about

Soulsha formed through a series of serendipitous meetings in the thriving and intersecting multi-cultural melting pot of Boston. We set out to adventure through our varying backgrounds, not letting go of what makes each of our cultures unique, but seeing other traditions as equally valid and beautiful.

Bàkk: A musical phrase played on the sabar drum. Composed by a griot or passed down from older generations in her or his family. Some bàkks are derived from a tradition of rhythmically declaimed spoken word, called taasu.

Tune: A melody, usually without lyrics, played on traditional instruments. Composed by a traditional musician or passed down from older generations. Most of the tunes that appear on this record are in the Scottish tradition.

Soulsha’s music is composed of several elements stemming from different traditions. Each track is a collage of songs, tunes, and bàkks. Some of these come from long ago and their authors have been forgotten; others are newer, composed in the same tradition by band members or others.
